ABANDONED RACE:
When a race that has started is stopped. Such a race could be restarted.

AUTO START:
A type of start in a race which involves a vehicle with two folding arms.

BROKE STRIDE:
When a horse changes its gait to one which is not permissible in its category (eg: from trot to gallop).

CANCELLED RACE:
When a race which was scheduled to happen does not take place.

COLT:
A male 3 years of age or less.

DAM:
The female parent of a horse.

DEAD HEAT:
When two or more horses finish in the same place in a particular race.

DISQUALIFIED:
When a horse or jockey is prevented from participating in a race or excluded from the attained position in a race due to a decision by the race judges.

FALSE START:
When a horse or a number of horses taking part in a race start the race before being signalled to do so.

FILLY:
A female 3 years of age or less.

GAIT:
The type of stride used by a race horse which can be trot or gallop.

GELDING:
A castrated male of any age.

LEG:
One of a number of races on which the player has placed bets.

MAIDEN:
A horse which has not yet won a race.

MARE:
A female 4 years of age or more.

MULTIPLIER:
A feature of the game, presented in a special area on the coupon, which allows the player to increase the stake by marking up to three numbers to multiply the stake. This feature cannot be used together with Harry Boy.

NON-RUNNER:
A horse which does not participate in a race it was scheduled to participate in (scratched).

PHOTO FINISH:
When two horses cross the finish too closely to identify a winner, officials call for a photograph of the race, taken exactly at the finish line, to help them determine which horse was ahead.

A document outlining the General Rules for the operation of the U*BET Horse Racing games, and the Special Regulations for each U*BET Horse Racing bet type. POINTS OF SALE:
The outlets authorised by MALTCO LOTTERIES Limited to offer U*BET games and other National Lottery games.

POSTPONED:
When a race is moved forward by up to a maximum of number of hours from when it was scheduled to commence and still retains its validity in the bet.

PROGRAMME:
Contains information covering a specific time period, which includes the races, information about the horses and jockeys, and other useful information for the player. The latest programme may be collected / viewed at any MALTCO LOTTERIES Limited Point of Sale or on the company’s website (www.maltco.com).

RE-RUN RACE:
When a race is stopped and started again.

RESERVE LIST:
The list of horses, in a particular order of priority, which will replace any of the player’s selections should any or all of these be scratched.

RESERVE SELECTIONS:
A player may indicate other horses, besides the ones selected, to take the place of a horse or horses which do not participate in a race.

SCRATCHED:
A horse that is withdrawn from a race before the start (non-runner).

SIRE:
The male parent of a horse.

STAKE:
The amount of money a player places on a bet. Also known as INVESTMENT.

SULKY:
A cart which is pulled by a horse through a harness and which carries the jockey.

TAKE-OUT:
A portion of the total amount of money placed on bets which is subtracted to cover fees and taxes applicable. The remaining amount (net total) is transferred to the betting pool.

TICKET:
A computerised participation receipt issued by the MALTCO LOTTERIES on-line terminal indicating the selections made by the player. The ticket is the unique valid document required to claim winnings.

TOTE BETTING:
A form of betting in which the players who have made the correct predictions receive a share of the total pool of money, less taxes and expenses, played on a particular race or races.

VAULT START:
A type of race start where horses turn around in circles in the track behind each other and in the last turn they line beside each other for the start. If a horse is beyond the start line when the starter gives the Go it will be a False Start.

VOID RACE:
When a race commences and finishes but is declared null for betting purposes.
